     Changing the paint in your bathroom can give a bathroom an updated look without costing a lot of money.  Painting a bathroom, though, can be a lot more challenging than painting your average room due to all of  the corners and edges that a bathroom has. 

      It is important to consider what type of paint you will choose to paint your bathroom.  There are many types of indoor paint available.  A bathroom has the tendency to get very hot and steamy due to those long hot showers, so it would be best to purchase a paint that is mold and mildew resistant.  Before beginning to paint, you need to make sure that there aren't any damp areas.  If there are damp areas, be sure to let them dry before beginning.  Make sure there is no mold in your bathroom.  If you suspect that there may be mold, you should call a professional who can come and remove the mold.  Painting over it will not fix the problem.

    Bathrooms can be tiny or rather large.  The colors and designs you choose in your bathroom will determine whether you make the room appear smaller, larger, shorter, or taller.  For example, using vertical stripes can make a short bathroom appear taller.  Some people also like to add a stencil border around the upper portions of the walls.  There are many stencils available, and you can purchase them at your local home improvement or paint store or even online. 

     You may want to consider adding a faux finish to your wall.  For example, the crackle technique is a popular look which will recreate the look of aged porcelain with fine line webbing.  Dragging is another technique which will give your walls subtle color variations.  Sponge painting is also a popular and very easy painting technique for your bathroom.  This technique allows you to put a base color down, but then add additional colors to your wall with a sponge.  You can also add glaze to your wall using a twisted rag or other instruments.  Marbling is another technique that many designers like to use in bathrooms.

     In order for the paint to look really good in your bathroom, you need to make sure that you have the proper lighting.  If you have a large bathroom, it is best to use overhead lights that will give you plenty of lighting.  A small bathroom may need sconces that will emit a soothing glow.  Having mirrors with lighting is also a good idea, especially for women trying to fix their hair and apply makeup.  Don't forget to add your personal touches through accessories.  Adding vases, photos, and of course luxurious towels will impress your guests and make you feel at home too.
